About me

As an accomplished interiors stylist, writer, author, creative consultant, trend forecaster, crafter, speaker and all-round homes obsessive, it’s safe to say I know how to make a space look gorgeous.

And I love helping others with this, too, from the brands and editorial clients I create and produce content for, to the renters and homeowners who have been inspired to try something new based on reading my published books and articles, seeing my styling work, or hearing me speak at an event or on a workshop.

But what really sets me apart is that I don’t just care about how a space looks - it’s how it makes those who live or work in it FEEL that fires me up. By taking into account the underlying psychology and neuro-aesthetics of how certain colours, shapes and materials can benefit our wellbeing, as well as championing design that ‘does good’, the outcome will always be one that resonates.

My Books

For the past decade, creating, writing and contributing to design books has formed a chunky portion of my overall work output (and allowed me to tick off ‘become a published author’ from five-year-old me’s bucket list!)

I’ve now worked with several different publishers to write and produce two of my own original concepts, two proposed titles which needed an author to bring them to life, and most recently, co-working with an author to aid the production and content of their own commission.

I’ve also worked as a stylist on over a dozen books for the publishers CICO, helping to produce lifestyle photography to accompany the respective author’s craft projects or design ethos.

While these all cover very different topics and styles, my aim with all of them is to offer easy-to-follow, empowering advice that can be applied to any home, budget or aesthetic preference.

  • "Joanna Thornhill became the voice of Generation Rent, when she published her first book Home for Now in 2014. Then she scrambled onto the housing ladder, and became a go-to source for clever, resourceful, and above all attractive, design ideas if you're short on space and cash - and who isn't? She shares her secrets in the super-prescient My Bedroom is an Office (2019)"

  • "We approached Jo to help curate imagery for a number of exciting new launches for Smeg and help maximise press coverage ahead of the peak Christmas season. We hadn’t worked with a stylist for several years; our aim was to give our imagery a more editorial feel and create something that feels new and fresh. We felt Jo was the ideal fit - as well as being a Smeg fan and customer herself, her style perfectly matched the look we were after and we knew we could rely on her to bring our vision to life."

  • "Lying in bed and trying to wind down from a long day is hard to do when you are looking at your desk! The tips you gave to our podcast listeners to use household furniture as desks, and ways to visually soften storage containers so you don’t feel like you’re at an office, were so helpful. Your ideas not only helped us make our own home offices blend in with the rest of the home, but made themless stressful to look at when you’re going to bed."
